The Workshop was founded in 1990 and has always brought forward an original visual style, having made many classic skate videos including Time Code, Photosynthesis and Mindfield. The trademark Alien video aesthetic has revolved around integrating skate footage with striking 16mm film shots of bizarre cultural oddities and various unclassifiable ‘Americana’.
The consistency of the workshop’s output has benefited greatly from a long-running association with the musician Dinosaur Jr, who has been incorporated into the soundtrack of all Alien Workshop full lengths to date. Its safe to say that all Alien Workshop features have become classics in their own right, from their visually innovative debut ‘Memory Screen’ in 1991, right up to their powerful 2009 release ‘Mind Field’ (2009). Between these two landmark releases you will find ‘Timecode’ (1997 ) which brought Lennie Kirk’s lunatic antics to a wider audience, and the era-defining ‘Photosynthesis’ in 2000 which in particular saw Love Park and other iconic Philadelphia spots torn a new one by a heavy team. Photosynthesis also introduced the Workshop’s sister brand Habitat Skateboards to the industry via a heavy hitting introductory montage.
Although the team has changed a lot the Workshop has played a hand in advancing the careers of many street skating legends including Lennie Kirk, Josh Kalis, Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen. The modern day team boasts some incredibly versatile skaters including bowl and rail destroyer Grant Taylor, wall-creeping east coast torch carrier Jake Johnson and bespectacled ledge killer Tyler Bledsoe. Although they have not released a full length video since 2009, the Workshop is keeping their visual iconography alive with their online ‘Life Splicing’ online video series, which includes full parts from newer team members as well as their 2013 ‘TOUROHIO’ tour video.
