Spitfire Wheels: A Comprehensive Buyer's Guide

When it comes to skateboarding, having the right wheels can make all the difference. One brand that stands out in skateboarding is Spitfire Wheels. Founded in 1987 by Jim Thiebaud, Spitfire has become synonymous with high-quality, durable wheels that offer unbeatable performance.

In this buyer's guide, we'll explore the different types of Spitfire wheels, their unique features, and help you choose the perfect set for your skateboarding needs. Whether you're a street skater, transition rider, or park shark, Spitfire has a wheel suitable for you.

The Three Main Types of Spitfire Wheels

Since 2010, Spitfire three main types of urethane wheels to cater to different types of skaters are:

  • Spitfire OG Classics: The OG Classics were the first wheels ever released by Spitfire, and they continue to be a favourite among skateboarders. With a hard wheel, wide riding surface, and clean cutaway shape, these wheels are suitable for street skating, transition, and bowl riding. They are available in two different hardness options: 99a and 101a.
  • Spitfire Chargers: If you're looking for a softer wheel for cruising and long-distance skating, the Spitfire Chargers are the ideal choice. These wheels come in an 80HD durometer and are available in 54mm, 55mm, 56mm and 58mm sizes. What sets the Chargers apart is their anti-flex technology, which provides rigidity while still offering a smooth ride.
  • Spitfire Formula Four: The Formula Four series is Spitfire's signature line, designed to provide high-end abrasion resistance and prevent flat spots. These wheels are perfect for technical street skating and park riding. With nine different shapes and three durometers to choose from, the Formula Four range offers speed, control, and durability.

Now that we've explored the main types of Spitfire wheels, let's delve deeper into the specifics of each category and their compounds.

Spitfire Wheel Compounds

Spitfire wheels come in a variety of durometers, or hardness levels. The durometer of a wheel determines how grippy it is and how well it slides.

  • 80A or 80 HD Durometer: Softer wheels with a durometer of 80a or 80HD are a good choice for cruising and light tricks. They provide a smooth ride and are easy to control.
  • 92a-95a Durometer: Harder wheels with a durometer of 92a-95a are a better option for transition and park skating. They offer more grip and stability, making them ideal for skating on rough surfaces.
  • 97 Durometer: Wheels with a durometer of 97 are a good all-around wheel that can be used for a variety of skating styles. They offer a good balance of grip and slide, making them perfect for street skating, park skating, and cruising.
  • 99A Durometer: A wheel with a durometer of 99a is ideal for street skating. It provides a good balance of grip and slide, making it perfect for performing tricks.
  • 101a Durometer: The hardest Spitfire wheels have a durometer of 101a. They are designed for street skating and offer the ultimate in speed and control.
