Polar Pants Buyer's Guide

Polar Pants

Sweden, land of the meatball, the Volvo, and the connoisseur’s choice of skateboard brand, Polar Skate Co. It’s undeniable that Polar has been a force to be reckoned with since it burst onto the skateboarding scene in 2011 with Pontus Alv at the helm on creative duties. In fact, it could be argued that the rise of Polar, and other Euro-centric brands helped to end, or at least halter, the largely Californian focused skateboard industry, and broaden people’s horizons. NOTE was the first shop in the UK to stock the Swedish brand, and our initial packages used to come complete with Pontus Alv original artwork.

Known for their high quality garments, classy designs, and interesting graphics frequently provided by artist-in-residence Jacob Ovgren, the brand appeals to a wide demographic of skaters and civilians alike. Whilst Polar t-shirts, hoodies, and jackets are undeniably banging, perhaps their strongest creation to date has been on the trouser/pant front, paving the way for the revival of baggy pants, with Polar Big Boy Pants spearheading the attack.

The influence of the Polar Big Boy Pant is impossible to ignore, and has seen your favourite skater’s favourite skater rocking pairs of them, regardless of their clothing sponsors, with notable Big Boy Pant wielders including Tiago Lemos, Eric Koston, Ishod Wair and Heitor Da Silva. With that in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at Polar pants and put together a Polar pants buyer’s guide.

Big Boy Jeans and Big Boy Cords

The baggiest of Polar’s pant offering and arguably the poster child of the baggy-jean revival, Polar Big Boy jeans are undoubtedly the most popular trouser that has graced NOTE in recent years. Featuring a 100% cotton, thick denim fabric, staple ‘Big Boy’ embroidery on the change pocket, woven-label on the inner waist, and a high waist and tapered leg, the Big Boys have taken over and led to a whole generation of 90s inspired, baggy jean clad individuals. On top of the denim offerings, Polar also have a Big Boy Cord in their arsenal, featuring 100% cotton, 345 GSM fabric, with 8 wales per inch.

93 Denim, Cargo and Cords

For those not quite bold enough to sport Big Boys, you can dip your toes into the world of baggy denim with the Polar 93 Pant offering a semi-baggy fit, and a straight leg, providing a reserved alternative to the Big Boy, keeping you looking dope, albeit in a slightly more refined manner. Also made from 100% cotton denim, the ’93 pant features an embroidered character on the change pocket and a woven label on the waist. Alongside the 93 denim jeans, Polar also have a cord equivalent, and have recently introduced the 93 Cargo to ensure you’ve got enough pockets for any essentials you need to have on, or around your person at any one time.

92 Denim

Alongside the 93 jeans comes the latest denim offering from Polar Skate Co in the form of their slightly tapered sister, the 92 denim jean. Featuring 100% cotton denim, character embroidery on the prophylactic pocket and a semi baggy fit. Fantastic alternative as an entry-level baggy pant for your first foray into the world of dope, or a refined jean for an occasion when you can't rock up looking like you're about to rack a load of paint.

91 Denim

Coming in after the 92 is the 91 and you guessed it, it is the straighter leg and slimmer thigh version of the 92 or 93. This one is pretty classic fit in the jean world in fact its pretty similar to the 90s cut of very famous denim brand's most iconic model. It's still got plenty of room to manoeuvre but it's definitely a more reined in version on the Polar trouser line up.

89 Jeans

Wrapping up Polar's denim offering is the 89. This is Polar's slimmest jean. It's no spray on skinny jean but considering how baggy things have got in skating, this is definitely on the more narrow side. Like the 91 it's high waisted but rather than a straight looser fit, it's a straight legged regular fit.

44 Pants

The 44s head in the opposite direction to the 89: Polar’s widest straight leg outside of the Big Boy, cut long and loose for maximum freedom. High waisted and heavy on the work pant energy, some seasons drop with double-knee panels, some without, but the fit stays the same — big, straight, and built for skating.

Surf Pants

Pontus cites the Surf Pant as the first pant that Polar made that he was really happy with. Designed from a hatred of sweating excessively and pants sticking to your leg when skating, the Surf Pant is aimed at providing a lightweight, super loose pant that has a lot of airflow and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all. 100% cotton, twill fabric, elastic waist to keep you loose and fancy free, tapered leg, and the signature freedom fit. These were an absolute revelation for a lot of people when they hit the scene.
