It was founded in 1987 by Tommy Guerrero and Jim Thiebaud as the first skate brand out of their now world famous Deluxe Distribution family of companies, which they operate out of San Francisco, California.

Spitfire pride themselves on producing the highest quality skateboard wheels on the market. Their Formula Four performance urethane has been specifically engineered for greater speed and control, smooth anti-stick sliding and unmatched flatspot resistance.
They claim that their latest wheels were developed to combine all of the desired properties of a performance wheel without sacrificing any one attribute at the expense of another. In tests by their formidable team of professionals, their Formula Four Wheels retained more of their original material, coned less and kept their original shapes and sizes longer than any other wheel.

Spitfire released their only full length video in 1993, simply entitled Spitfire. It features many legendary skateboarders from that time period, including Drake Jones, Ed Templeton, Jamie Thomas, John Cardiel and Jeremy Wray. Nowadays the brand boasts a formidable team roster including legends and new comers alike, including the likes of Andrew Reynolds, Dennis Busenitz, Eric Koston and Guy Mariano.

Since the relatively recent growth in shorter, web-based video projects, Spitfire have released a number of noteable welcome edits and videos celebrating the release of particular signature models. Memorable video parts include Andrew Reynold’s introduction part, Mike Mo Capaldi's introduction part in the form of a mock "Sponsor-me" video, and Daewon Song's promotional part for the "Enter the Daewon" signature wheel.
