It was founded in 1981 in San Francisco, California, and is a hotbed of the best skateboarding photography, and interviews and reviews with professional skateboarders as well as up and coming musicians and bands. The long running clothing line offered by the magazine has become a skateboarding staple.

Thrasher has instituted various traditions within skateboarding, the most high profile of which is the title of Skater of the Year, a prestigious honour awarded by the magazine annually. This tradition began in 1990 and is one of the greatest accolades a professional skater can achieve. The award is given based on who has received the most votes from Thrasher’s readers. Tony Hawk was the first person to be named skater of the year, whilst Ishod Wair took the title in 2013.

The list of past S.O.T.Y winners reads like a who who of professional skateboarding, and features such hallowed alumni as Danny Way, John Cardiel, Mike Carroll and Eric Koston. Chris Cole and Danny Way are the only two skaters to have won Skater of the Year twice.

Once the preserve of only the most rugged and core skateboarders, the line of clothing issued by the magazine since its humble beginnings has benefited from a recent surge in popularity within a wider mainstream audience, thanks to its adoption by numerous current musicians. Thrasher have been quick to capitalise on its popularity, and to date have done collaborations with numerous popular skateboarding brands including Huf, Diamond Supply Co and Supreme.
