Nike SB has become one of the largest skateboard shoe producers since Nike’s successful forage into the skate market in 2002, after two previous unsuccessful attempts to enter the market in the mid and late nineties. Originally focussed around the ‘Dunk’ model, the brand has grown and adapted to produce a wide range of styles to move with the changing desires of the skate world. Nike have enlisted some of the biggest names in skateboarding to represent their brand, including Paul Rodriguez, Brian Anderson and Gino Iannucci.
Whilst earlier efforts by Nike to penetrate skateboarding failed, due to a lack of trust from inside the skateboarding world to let this corporate outsider in, the Nike SB brand has been successful in winning the support of skateboarders by demonstrating a commitment to support independent businesses by only allowing skate shops to stock the range. By far the most popular Nike SB shoe to date has been the Zoom Janoski, the signature shoe of Habitat Skateboards pro Stefan Janoski.
Nike SB have been responsible for various skate DVD releases including Nothing But The Truth and Debacle. More recently they have been working on rolling out a three part online video series entitled the SB Chronicles, which is currently still unfolding.
Nike have been putting their money where their mouth is skatewise, and even went so far as to build an invite-only private skatepark in London in October 2013 to celebrate the worldwide release of Brian Anderson’s signature shoe, the Project BA. As one of the UK’s top independent skate shops, riders from Note were invited to a private session at Project BA London - the results of which can be found on the Note blog.
