An independent skateboarder-owned and run company, Magenta is a collaborative business venture between brothers Vivien and Jean Feil, alongside Soy Panday who is in charge of Magenta’s art direction. All Magenta boards and wheels are made in USA, with all clothing printed and embroidered in France.
The original line up of the creative new brand was made up of Strasbourg’s Vivien Feil, Parisian Soy Panday and Bordeaux street activist Leo Valls. Tired of being sponsored by companies that didn’t represent them to the full extent of their creative possibility, Viven and Soy had long talked of doing a board company, and had even attempted one a few years earlier under the name ‘Metropolitan’, for whom Leo Valls originally turned pro. They introduced Magenta to the world by means of an impressive debut full length entitled Microcosme, which featured parts from the three French shredders as well as an impressive who’s who montage of respected underground heads worldwide.
Since then the brand has expanded its distribution worldwide and went on to recruit Floridian Jimmy Lannon and Baltimore resident Zach Lyons to help represent the brand in the USA. Legendary filmmaker Josh Stewart helped expand the operation by taking on distribution responsibilities stateside under his Theories Of Atlantis outfit. It was clear from the video Capsules and other glimpses that the skate world was being given of the magenta team that the French-based entrepreneurs were heavily influenced by the ‘leave no stone unturned’ approach of Japanese skate videos, and their worldwide takeover was cemented with the pro addition of Tightbooth Production staff member Koichiro Uehara from Osaka and a guest board for Far East Skate Network mastermind Takahiro Morita. This Worldwide Connected relationship between France and Japan was cemented by the release of the collaborative DVD project Soleil Levant between Magenta, FESN and TBPR.
