Baker is the ultimate antidote to the clean cut image of skateboarding that has come to exist through the infiltration of big name corporate sponsors into the industry. It was initiated to glorify a less wholesome skateboarding lifestyle, one in which it’s chosen athletes hit bongs, vomit, rap over their own video parts and revel in the shamelessness of being a Californian stoner pile.
The Baker crew emerged as a legitimate board company around the same time as the now classic VHS video Baker 2G emerged in 2000. Prior to this, a mysterious video had surfaced in 1998 called Baker Bootleg, which featured Reynolds and the rest of the party-fuelled Warner Ave, Huntingdon Beach crew. Since then they have released a number of full length videos including Baker 3 (2005) - which introduced arguably the world’s most legendary skate pile, Antwuan Dixon, to the skate public’s attention - and more recently ‘Bake and Destroy’ in 2012, the premiere of which caused a small scale riot in downtown L.A, in true Baker style.
Having formally been distributed by Blitz Distribution, in 2007 Reynolds, alongside former Baker riders Jim Greco and Erik Ellington, established Baker Boys distribution through which to manage the distribution of Baker alongside other entrepreneurial ventures from Baker riders and associates past and present. These sister companies include Shake Junt, Deathwish skateboards (who Greco and Ellington jumped ship too in aid of launching the brand in 2008) , and the UK’s own Heroin Skateboards.
Although Reynolds has publicly reformed his image from his drinking, vomiting, party animal image of old to become a wise and seasoned skate veteran, he still keeps true to the Baker aesthetic of partying wildness through his team selections which currently include the toothless pool shredder Sammy Baca, Penny-a-like Bryan Herman and Aussie wid man Dustin Dollin alongside more clean cut kids like Riley Hawk, son of the Birdman and nicest-guy-in-skateboarding Theotis Beasley.
